Dr. Riggs will be using a specialized software called VSee designed for just this purpose. Your visit will take place via webcam or phone.
Is it secure?
YES. This is the primary reason Dr. Riggs is utilizing this software and requiring it for all remote visits. It is private and confidential according to the regulations set out by the HIPAA law.
Do I have to use this service?
NO. Dr. Riggs would PREFER to see you in person, and you are in no way required or obligated to use telemedicine services. However if you would like to see Dr. Riggs remotely for your convenience, you can only do so through this platform (NOT telephone). Please note that Dr. Smith and Dr. Marshall are NOT currently utilizing this service.
How much will it cost?
A telemedicine visit will be considered exactly the same as a regular in-person visit. That means you will be responsible for whatever copay, coinsurance, or out-of-pocket fee you usually pay.
Will my insurance cover it?
Based on new state and federal legislation, this will now be covered as the equivalent of a regular visit. If you have Cigna or BCBS, they will recognize this as they would any other visit with Dr. Riggs. If you have a different insurance and utilize out-of-network benefits, you will need to ask them whether they recognize telemedicine visits as regular visits. Our assistant Kelly can help you with this. Unfortunately Medicare and dual eligible Medicare-Medicaid do not cover telemedicine at this time.
How often can I use telemedicine instead of in person sessions?
This will be determined on a case-by-case basis, so please discuss with Dr. Riggs. However generally you will be required to meet for an in-person session at least once a month. Telemedicine sessions will take place on the same day and at the same time as your usual in person session.
Do I need to be in New York state?
According to licensure regulations psychologists are only permitted to practice in the state in which they are licensed. For telemedicine sessions this pertains to where the patient is located when they conference (i.e. their home or school address). Dr. Riggs is only licensed in New York state.
How do I utilize telemedicine sessions?
You will need to sign up for a VSee account (free), and also download some software, by clicking here. You will also need to sign an additional consent form for receiving this mode of treatment. Finally at the beginning of each session you will need to fill out a questionnaire about how you have been feeling in the last week and upload it to a secure link that Dr. Riggs will share with you. As some information is lost during telemedicine sessions, we make up for this by filling out this extra questionnaire before each session.
